A novel strain of the coronavirus (COVID-19) - a pneumonia-like respiratory illness - has come to spread rapidly across the globe ever since it first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late December 2019. Health officials in China have published the first details on nearly 45,000 cases of the novel coronavirus disease that originated there, saying more than 80% have been mild and new ones seem to be falling since early this month, although it's far too soon to tell whether the outbreak has peaked, AP reported.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli told Fox News on Monday that the origin of the coronavirus outbreak remains virtually unknown — and refused to rule out a startling theory that the virus may have originated in a high-security biochemical lab in Wuhan, China.

The Government's strategy of waiting until coronavirus is peaking before closing schools and asking vulnerable people to stay at home has been criticised by experts, who warned that further measures were needed to stop the epidemic spiralling out of control.
Mr Trump also refused to take responsibility for testing delays and cuts to the US pandemic office (accusing a female reporter of asking corona virus live counter a "nasty question"), and said he would "likely" get tested for the coronavirus after he came into contact with confirmed cases.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the following regions that the Spanish Ministry of Health have designated as areas of community transmission of coronavirus: Madrid and La Rioja, and the municipalities of La Bastida and Vitoria (both in the Basque Country) and Miranda de Ebro (in Castilla y León).
At the close of a two-day international forum in Geneva, Switzerland, assessing the outbreak, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke about the importance of developing candidate therapeutics and easy-to-apply diagnostics for identifying active, asymptomatic and resolved infections.

Xi admitted obvious shortcomings in the response to the epidemic,” but did not give details, according to The New York Times Xi also said officials should learn lessons” and improve China's ability to respond to public health emergencies, the newspaper reported.
